Week 3 - Maqasid Shariah and Sustainable Development
22 March 2023
For our third class, we have learned about Maqasid Shariah and Sustainable Development. It also related to National Philosophy Education, where it contain five wisdoms, first,
continuous, holistic, and integrated education. Second, to produce a balanced people in terms of spirituality, emotional, physical. Third, it is based on a strong belief and obedience to Allah. Next, to be a citizen who can make peace for themselves & others. Lastly, to give mercy to others. Our National Education already covered the five necessities of human existence: Maqasid Shariah. In the world’s perspective, UNESCO produces four pillars of education which are learning to know, learning to do, learning to be and learning to live together. There are five necessities of human existence in Maqasid Shariah which are faith, life, intellect, lineage and wealth. First is faith, which means we need to be a person with integrity & have direction in life that can increase trust and appreciation for other people. It is a way to build understanding and find commonalities for the benefit of humanity that Islam emphasises inter-faith dialogue. Second,we need to do the practice of bringing benefits to our life. As we know, Islam is a religion of peace that refers to making peace, and among others, being mutually peaceful. People desire to live a life in peace and the conditions that support peace are essential to realising a meaningful life. Third, we need to feed our mind with knowledge (intellect). It is the most significant blessing that Allah grants for us so that we are able to acquire knowledge and differentiate between right and wrong. Differences between humans and other creatures are the mind, therefore Allah has made humans as successor on earth (khalifatullah fi al ard).
Next, we need to live together to have a family and good relationship with society (lineage). It is related to the future of the planet which must be safe and peaceful to be lived by next generations. Thus, we should not exceed or waste the use of the resources.Lastly we need to share, generate and distribute the wealth to the people. Wealth is something that is desired by humans. In attaining wealth, at times friends become foes. Because of wealth, siblings would turn against each other. Due to the greed for wealth, one forgets about halal and haram. While engrossed in attaining wealth, the ibadah (worship) unto Allah gets neglected. These are among the challenges pertaining to wealth. Our wealth solely belongs to Allah, which has been predetermined when the soul was blown into the fetus inside the womb. Allah has granted responsibility upon those bestowed with wealth, that a portion of it is to be taken out for zakat, sadaqah (charity), orphans, and the need of the community, without delaying it.
“Every day two angels come down from Heaven and one of them says, ‘O Allah! Compensate every person who spends in Your Cause,’ and the other (angel) says, ‘O Allah! Destroy every miser.” [Narrated by al-Bukhari and Muslim]
This means that the one who spends from his wealth as ibadah or to attain nearness to Allah with full sincerity, he will not take it as a loss, deficiency, and poverty. Such is the advantage of those making infaq of their wealth that they have full certainty upon the guarantee by Allah of increased rizq from unexpected sources.
